John McDermott
M.Ed Sports Psychology

My introduction into the world of competitive table tennis began at age 12, playing in my basement with family and friends. What started out as casual fun quickly turned into a serious passion. By high school, I was all-in!

After years of grinding and pushing my limits, I eventually became nationally ranked and earned the chance to play in the U.S. Open, a moment I had dreamed about since the basement days. In 2020, I became sponsored by Stag International, an India based multi-sport equipment company with a strong interest in promoting table tennis in the United States.

The next stop on my journey was playing for the University of Massachusetts where I compiled a 54-6 men’s singles record while pursuing a BA in psychology. Following four years at UMASS, I enrolled at Springfield College where I earned my master’s degree in sports psychology.

Today, I continue to compete in the game I love, but spend most of my time as a Mental Performance Coach, training other athletes to train their minds. I have counseled athletes in almost every sport and I’m currently the Mental Performance Coach for the River Dell, NJ Varsity Hockey team.

What I have learned through competing as a coach and a player is that the will to win is nothing without the will to prepare. True toughness comes not from our muscles, but from our minds. The desire to win is in all of us…  let’s perfect it together!
